PIVÔ is pleased to present the Brazilian artist Leticia Ramos and her project “VOSTOK – a prologue”, as part of the program “PIVÔ INVITES”. Ramos will open the set for shooting and filming images for the book and film on the second floor. From 12th March the space will be open for the public visits to the artist´s work ambience.

After participating in an artistic expedition to the North Pole, Leticia was surprised by the news about the scientific Russian base in Antarctica and how they had obtained samples from a lake 4 km under the ice. These samples are “time capsules” of the moment the water froze.

The artist develops four sets that recreate the polar lake: an aquarium, a model, a little swimming pool and a screen for projections, from which the photographs will be captured. Each scene will be representing the fantastic story based on a scientific hypothesis, and with these steps, the narrative process becomes art.

With this experience Leticia Ramos evokes an unreal world. Several layers, from the fact and manipulated images to the arrangement of a fictional universe, allow the public to think about how a narration is constructed within the borders between the truth and the farce.

The pictures will be published as a logbook that will be part of the larger series “Atlas of extraordinary things”. In this series the artist investigates the fabrication of new cameras in order to reconstruct the idea of movement. The book will be lunched in the second half of 2013.

As a conclusion of the production in PIVÔ, Ramos organizes the performance “Rehearsal for recording the orchestra”, in collaboration with the artist Lúcia Koch and the composer and conductor Rosanno Snel. The event will take place on the film set, with special illumination by Koch and score for six instruments in four movements by Snel, both of them inspired by the “VOSTK- a prologue” images. The musicians will play an improvised composition with percussion and wind instruments as well as sounds produced with Leticia´s installation objects. The performance will be on 5^th April, at 19.00 hours and will be open to the public. It will be the final point of the creative and productive process.

LETÍCIA RAMOS (Santo Antonio da Patrulha – RS – 1976) is a videomaker and artist who lives in São Paulo, Brazil. She studied Architecture and Urbanism at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and Film School at the Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado, in São Paulo. Her artistic investigation focuses on the creation of her own photographic tools to capture and reconstruct movement and its ulterior representation in video. Her works have been presented in major exhibitions and galleries such as Tate Gallery in London, the 16º Videobrasil in São Paulo, the Laboratório de Arte Alameda in Mexico, Casa Andrade Muricy in Curitiba, the Museum of Modern Art in Salvador, Centro Cultural São Paulo and Paço Imperial in Rio de Janeiro. In 2009, she was selected by the Instituto Itaú Cultural for the award RUMOS of Visual Arts.
